Rahul Gandhi has launched his own video series to counter the corrupt mainstream media which has started colluding with fascist forces in the age of post-truth politics. Introducing the objective of the series Gandhi wrote in his Facebook post, “Today a large part of the Indian news media has been captured by fascist interests. A hate filled narrative is being spread by television channels, whatsapp forwards and false news. This narrative of lies is tearing India apart. I want to make our current affairs, history and crisis clear and accessible for those interested in the truth.”

I have earlier written about how mainstream media systematically silences the opposition voice. How every Congress event, Rahul Gandhi’s sound bytes or Tweets are either hushed up or covered in an unflattering way that suits BJP’s agenda of portraying Cong and RG as a failure.

The first in the series was launched at 11 am 17 July 2020 on the issue of Chinese incursion. Why China chose this particular time in history to increase the anti India activity? What did India do that triggered worsening relations with all our neighbors? These are questions addressed by Rahul Gandhi in the 3 minutes series. Watch.

My Review

The video is made with professional expertise and high production qualities featuring great graphics, visuals, and background music. It is made in a documentary style with Mr Gandhi looking not directly speaking to the camera unlike Modi who looks at the eye of the nation through TV screens. I would have therefore preferred if he spoke to the camera to do away with the invisible fourth wall and directly touched his followers.

One of the key point made by him was that under PM Modi India has chosen to follow “transactional relationship” with nations instead of a thought out policy. This is not the first time he has flagged it, it was said in his Germany, UK and Dubain tour in 2017-2018.

Response

Reactions have started coming on Twitter. I have earlier pointed out that senior Congress leaders like Shashi Tharoor, P Chidambaram among others do not retweet or amplify Rahul Gandhi’s activities, but today was not that day. Mr Tharoor has Tweeted and so have many others.

Congress team is running the hashtag #TruthWithRahulGandhi currently trending at no.2 in India with 27.5K Tweets per hour.

The mainstream media however is yet to cover the launch. The event was missing from 12 pm headlines on both NDTV and India Today. Everything political leaders do the nation comes to know mainly via TV media. From Balakot strike to Howdy Modi to Yoga Day we know all about Modi’s wonders because of TV. Modi’s Mann Ki Baat is seen as a national festival. But if whatever Rahul Gandhi does is never shown on TV how will India know? Won’t then India keep asking, where is Rahul Gandhi?
